Hour of Code week at IES Södertälje

Hour of Code week at IES Södertälje

It was a great week of students participating in the Hour of Code. This week helps promote computer science to boys and girls around the world. It is a great way to show the variety of jobs and possibilities that are within computer science. Thank you to all the staff and students who participated last week!

Mr Wester held the hour of code in his science lesson

Hour of Code is conducted every year during Computer Science Education Week . 2018 Computer Science Education Week was held 3-9 December, but you can have an Hour of Code at any time of the year! Computer Science Education Week is held annually in memory of computer science pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper 's birthday (December 9, 1906).

Some of our more "Tech-savvy" grade 9's helped out during the grade 4 class

Mr Wester had this to say about the week -

Each student should be given the opportunity to learn computer science. It supports problem solving, logical thinking and creativity. By starting early, students will be given the skills they need for a career in the 21st century.

Södertälje Fältarna Visit IES Södertälje

Södertälje Fältarna Visit IES Södertälje

Södertälje's own youth organization "Fältarna" visited IES Södertälje and held a talk for our year 7 students.

The talk was an introduction to their work and to inform the students of the help they can offer in conjunction with teachers an other staff members in school.

Fältarna are a group of adults dedicated to the help and support of young people between the ages of 12 to 18. They are present all around town especially in schools and fritids.

Micheler and Lotta explain what it is to work for Fältarna:

A Fältarna is someone who the children can talk to, even when things are hard at home and school. We are their friends but also a role model. We are hired by the council and social services so we have a lot of support in our role. We are everywhere where young people may hang out and spend most of our times in schools. we have even covered an event in Stockholm.

When asked about the role Micheler and Lotta explained:

We really appreciate the job, we appreciate that the kids know that they can come and talk to us and we can help, it feels really good.

For more information about Fältarna and their work, check out:

We at IES would like to thank Lotta and Micheler for their visit and look forward to seeing them more around the school.

Inter-House Table Tennis Competition

Inter-House Table Tennis Competition

From beginners to budding professionals, we had a great turnout at our Inter-house table tennis competition.

The tournament was arranged by Ms Kerr the Head of house for Ventus.

Mr Wester said this about the event:

Wow!, what a wonderful event for all, a huge thanks to all the staff involved. I thought the students had a wonderful time, you could tell because of their energy and enthusiasm

With Mr Wester keeping score and Ms Kerr as head referee for Years 4 and 5 and Mr Douville and Mr Berny referring the Years 6, 7 and 8, the students had an awesome time.

Medina Grade 4:

It was really fun, I tried my hardest and it was funny that Ms Kerr made us say sorry if we hit the net, I didn't know that was a rule. I didn't win my game but I really enjoyed taking part.

Congratulations to our winners in each year group. In Year 4, Isaiah from Ventus, in Year 5, Adrian from Aqua, in year 6 Milad from Ignis, in Year 7 Yousef from Ignis and in Year 8 Ananda from Aqua.

Well done to all who took part and a big thanks to all the staff who helped run the event.

Spookfest at IES Södertälje

Class 6a took it upon themselves to organise a spooky spectacular celebration for grade 4 and 5 students.

An amazing time was had by all including some fantastic costumes and crazy dancing!

With DJ (Mr) Brace at the helm, the students danced away the night and left with some wonderful memories and sore feet.

Mr Furie, Teacher and 6a mentor -

We're very proud of the efforts made by the students of 6a, and would like to say a huge thank you to Mr Brace for an amazing party, Ms Sylwia for volunteering to help out, Mrs Furie for all of her hard work and excellent dancing, our class parents who helped on the night, and the school Principal Mr Öhman for all his help and allowing it to happen.

A great night had by all!
